Sharp M.A. The purpose of psychotherapy should be to reinforce the process of unfolding selfhood called by some the process of individuation. It should be the therapist's intention to courageously go wherever the process leads or refer the client to someone who is willing to do so. The therapist is the catalyst that helps the client go beyond his limits, utilize untried resources, and, in the end, relinquish old ways so that he may step forward into tomorrow new-born. Unfortunately, this does not always happen, and the fault is shared with the therapist when his personal inhibitions prevent him from working with the process and cause him to work against it. The sticking point comes when conventional morality and the impulse toward individuation begin to diverge, as eventually they must. Persona Non Grata, or Amazing Grace
Right before my confrontation with the Collective Unconscious in 1975, a school mate told me of how one Winter's night her grandmother, who was grieving the loss of her husband and was herself dying, got out of bed, delirious, and, barefoot in her nightgown, went outside into the garden beside the house. The family members made several attempts to keep her inside, but she went back out despite them. Eventually, they stopped interfering and let her go, though they stayed about to watch over her. Meg said that once in the garden she got down on her hands and knees and started digging in the snow, until, at last, she pulled up a red rose in full bloom. Later that night she died in peace holding it to her heart. I told Meg it was a beautiful story that obviously held great emotional value for her. She read between the lines and retorted, sharply, saying, "It's not a story. It happened for real just the way I said." Educating her on participation mystique and primary process
